Sustainable Production in the UAE
Sustainable production is now one of the defining challenges for manufacturers in the UAE. The International Framework: From Kyoto to COP28
The effort to coordinate global climate action began with the Kyoto Protocol, signed in 1997. Under that agreement, 169 countries accepted legally binding emissions targets. When many fell short, the protocol was wound down in 2020.
The Paris Climate Agreement, signed in 2016 by 196 countries, was designed to go further. Its goal is to limit the global temperature increase to below 2 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, with an ambition of 1.5 degrees. Unlike its predecessor, Paris brought both developed and developing economies into the same framework.
In 2015, UN member states adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals at the Sustainable Development Summit in New York. These goals span clean energy, responsible production, and climate action. For industrial manufacturers, they map directly onto decisions being made on factory floors every day.
The UAE's Own Commitments
The UAE's Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative is a commitment to eliminating the country's carbon footprint within this generation of businesses. The UAE Energy Strategy 2050 targets 44% clean energy in the national energy mix. These are not aspirational statements. They translate into real policy shifts, green procurement requirements, and regulatory expectations that manufacturers across the Emirates will increasingly need to meet.

Where Should UAE Manufacturers Start?

- Product carbon footprint: Map your lifecycle from raw material sourcing through to end of life, and develop action plans to reduce emissions at each stage.
- Technology investment: Replace energy-heavy equipment with modern alternatives, and structure the investment so the energy savings offset the cost over time.
- Renewable energy: Review your options - on-site solar generation, green tariff agreements with your utility, or both.
- Supply chain: Apply a carbon-reduction lens to raw material procurement and inbound logistics.
- Recycled materials: Shift to recycled inputs and sustainable packaging where your process allows.
- Waste management: Put a system in place focused on prevention and reduction, not just compliant disposal.
